Smooth nylons for automotive applications

Two new resins have been targeted for the gas-assist injection molding process. With 15 percent glass fiber and 25 percent mineral content, Capron SEGM35 H1 nylon 6 has a resin-rich surface, say Honeywell sources, that improves its appearance for high-fill applications such as mirror housings, roof racks, door handles, and bezels for automobiles. Decreased fill speeds and lower injection pressures required for the new Capron add up to faster cycle times, the company reports. Capron SEGM35 H1 comes in natural BK-122 and an outdoor UV color, and can be painted.

The second, Capron HM, is a high-modulus nylon 6 that reportedly also offers higher flow and better surface appearance than conventional high-modulus nylons. One of the two grades available, HMG13, is a 63 percent glass-filled nylon 6 with improved flexural strength (53,650 psi), flex modulus (2.6 million psi for dry-as-molded, 1.9 million psi with 50 percent RH), tensile strength (35,525 psi), and drop weight (1.8 ft-lb). A 50 percent glass-filled grade, HMG10, is also offered. Successful applications include mirror housing brackets, ski bindings, steering wheels, and automotive set frames. Price was not available.
