System Automates Automobile Rocker Panel Production

A new automation system is designed specifically for the post-mold handling of automotive rocker panels. After molding, rocker panels are transferred by a standard linear robot onto a rocker panel processing system, which degates the parts and flame treats the edges in preparation for painting. The panels are then transferred to a pick-up point for packaging.

The manufacturer says the system benefits rocker panel producers by reducing labor costs and part variability. Production rates are increased due to lower cycle times and part handling, as well as reduced damage to parts.

Rocker panels produced using this new system have won approval from General Motors, and are currently being used on 2000 Grand Ams.

These systems start at around $75,000, depending on the type of panel being produced and the options requested.
