Heat-resistant LCPs

Electronics assemblers searching for liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) with good temperature resistance have a new option. With a melting temperature of 698F, a series unveiled last month appears to meet this requirement. Vectra T-Series, a collaboration of Ticona and Polyplastics Co. Ltd., is still being developed to offer broad variations, such as low-warpage or high-modulus versions, to address wide market requirements.

Vectra T130, a 30 percent glass-fiber-reinforced grade, is currently undergoing customer evaluations. It reportedly has a heat deflection temperature of 572F under a load of 1.8 MPa. It?s also said to have enhanced mechanical properties and melt-flow characteristics, as well as improved melt stability over current LCPs on the market. This stability is hoped to contribute to increased productivity in molding.

This series is said to be environmentally friendly and achieved a UL V-0 rating without the use of flame retardant additives. Applications include electric appliances and electronics parts.
