DSM Biomedical expands development for PUR medical implant grades

DSM Biomedical (Berkeley, CA) will expand business development activities in the U.S. and Europe for its polyurethanes portfolio for chronically implanted medical devices. Earlier this year, DSM Biomedical expanded the role of its business development managers in the U.S. and Europe, as well as an application development manager in Europe, to offer what it calls an improved level of on-the-ground technical assistance for customers. The expanded positions made all three responsible for business development activities and representation of DSM Biomedical's broader portfolio.

The company also recently launched the next generation of its Bionate II PCU polymers and VitroStealth alternative coating technology. Medical devices and technologies that can utilize the materials include pacemakers, neurostimulation devices, prosthetic disks and spinal stabilization devices, artificial hearts, catheters, and glucose sensors, among others.

This news also comes on the heels of the announcement by DSM Medical that it signed nine new license agreements in 2009 for its Bionate, BioSpan, CarboSil, Elasthane, and PurSil brands of biomedical polymers. It also formed eight new development partnerships with medical device companies in the last year. The company says these contracts "underline an upward trend among medical device developers in enrolling material specialists to develop and license new polymer technologies essential to increasing the value, performance, and quality of their products." —[email protected]
