Sanner Grows Contract Development and Manufacturing Services for Device OEMs

Sanner GmbH has a well-earned reputation for providing high-quality primary packaging and desiccants to customers in the healthcare and supplements sectors. The company, founded in 1894, has also served as a global device contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for many years. It plans to make its device CDMO services a strategic focus and expand this business segment, Sanner announced in advance of its participation in Pharmapack 2023 in Paris this February.

Thanks to its many years of desiccant and injection molding expertise, Sanner said that it can offer OEMs complete solutions from a single source, especially for moisture-sensitive drug-device combination products. “With our significant experience and know-how as an industrial design and development partner to our customers, we are well placed to deliver on the new strategic orientation in all the key global regions,” said Sanner Group CEO Dr. Johannis Willem van Vliet in a prepared statement.

“We are broadening our service portfolio as device CDMO, amongst others, in design and development,” Christian Classen, Chief Sales Officer, told PlasticsToday. “We are extending our manufacturing capacities with two new state-of-the-art manufacturing plants in China and Germany, as well as with the geographical expansion with a manufacturing presence in the United States in the near future,” added Classen.

Sanner is headquartered in Bensheim, Germany, south of Frankfurt, and currently maintains a sales office in Kentucky. It has manufacturing operations in Germany, France, Hungary, and China.

Sanner has developed a flexible, standardized, stage-gate process, called Idea. Design. Process. (IDP), that provides customers with full support from device conception to development. For prototyping, Sanner uses additively manufactured injection molding tools to quickly provide detailed visual samples made from the same material as the finished product. An experienced industrial engineering team handles implementation with the development of automation and assembly concepts through to box-build logistics solutions or sterilization concepts. During industrialization and market introduction, customers benefit from Sanner's quality focus and an on-time in-full (OTIF) rating of 99%. The company is building on this foundation to deliver even more expansive contract design and manufacturing services to device OEMs.

“Customers are more and more interested in devices with connectivity on board and smart product solutions in general,” explained Classen. “Another area of interest is sustainability, not only when talking about manufacturing of the products, but even more when developing a new device. This implies considering the right raw material selection [and] reusability and recyclability of the single components after usage. These are areas where Sanner can offer the required services and advice,” said Classen.

Classen is a recent hire, joining Sanner in October 2022 boasting extensive experience in the international OEM and device CDMO markets. He and Henrik Bøggild, who came on board in September 2022 and is responsible for finance, controlling, purchasing, and IT, strengthen the management team and are key components in setting up the business for future success, said Sanner. They join Ralf Tiemann, long-standing CEO of Sanner Asia-Pacific, and group CEO van Vliet on the management team.
