Packaging: PET, Plasmax pair for wine bottles

Applying monolayer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles with silicon-oxide coatings, a British Columbia winery will use 750-ml plastic bottles for its Semillion/Chardonnay and Cabernet/Shiraz offerings. Artisan Wine Co. sources the bottles from Ball Corp. (Broomfield, CO), which used SIG Plasmax technology for barrier coating. According to David Fallis, VP of operations, Artisan Wine Co., “The combination of the PET bottle and screw-cap closure gives our customers a more convenient, environmentally-friendly wine packaging choice. Because Ball’s PET bottles are approximately one-tenth the weight of the average glass bottle, they can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the supply chain.” The company says the bottle’s barrier meets or exceeds competitive barrier technologies in terms of shelf life, while not affecting the PET waste stream and recycling.—[email protected]
