Cosmetic packaging combines nature with sophistication

A duo of thick-wall injection molded acrylic and a polypropylene-based wood-plastic composite (WPC) combine to present Natura Cosmeticos—Brazil’s largest cosmetics fragrance and personal care products—with an apt solution for its Aquarela line of makeup products.

The brightness and transparency of the acrylic ensures prominent visibility for the silkscreen-printed metal dispensing mechanism, which embodies traditional Brazilian handiworks such as lace trimmings and embroideries. An acrylic cover on the compact packaging, meanwhile, ensures high visibility for the motif formed via inmold relief decoration.

The WPC formulation used in the bases of the two products renders the wood particulates visible while still allowing good injection flow, and giving the product an environmentally friendly tinge. A pearlized masterbatch employed in the WPC mixes with the rustic aspects of the wood for a combined rustic and glowing effect.

Rexam Dispensing Systems’ (Suresnes, France) facility in Jundiai, Sao Paolo State, worked with Natura on the repack project. “Our main challenge was to develop packages that could join the transparency of the PMMA, a resin largely used by the automotive industry, with the delicacy of the Brazilian laceworks through the relief,” says Paula Froes, director–sales and marketing, South America, Rexam Personal Care Div.

Says Maria Lucia Roscoe, marketing and innovation manager for Natura, “Rexam’s Jundiai facility has helped us enhance the glamour and appeal of this brand, and maintain our sustainability requirements so vital to our corporate philosophy.” —[email protected]
