BASF + ContiTech + BMW = first plastic transmission crossbeam

Scoring another first in automotive metal replacement, the first transmission crossbeam injection molded of polyamide has been made for the new BMW 5 Series Grant Turismo 550i. Developed by ContiTech Vibration Control (Hanover, Germany) in collaboration with materials maker BASF and the automaker, if the part were aluminum, it would weigh twice as much as the PA version.

BASF + ContiTech + BMW = first plastic transmission crossbeam

Scoring another first in automotive metal replacement, the first transmission crossbeam injection molded of polyamide has been made for the new BMW 5 Series Grant Turismo 550i. Developed by ContiTech Vibration Control (Hanover, Germany) in collaboration with materials maker BASF and the automaker, if the part were aluminum, it would weigh twice as much as the PA version.



In production on the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 550i, this transmission crossbeam is the first one of its type made of thermoplastic.

The crossbeam, which is molded of BASF’s Ultramid A3WG 10 CR, received the first place Innovation Award from the German Federation of Plastics (AVK) a few days after regular production of the component began.



The crossbeam is the direct link to the engine-transmission mount and therefore must be designed and built to withstand high stress loading. Also, it must be stable in high temperatures due to its location near the exhaust system. And one final advantage for the plastic version: better recyclability.


In production on the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 550i, this transmission crossbeam is the first one of its type made of thermoplastic. —[email protected]
