3D Systems Inc. (Rock Hill, SC) has unveiled a UL 94 V-0 compliant flame-retardant plastic for selective laser sintering (SLS) systems. DuraForm FR 100 is slated for prototypes or low-volume rapid manufacturing of consumer product or aerospace applications.

The material is halogen- and antimony-free, FAR 25.853 (non-drip) compliant, has low smoke density and toxicity, exhibits toughness combined with impact resistance, and is reportedly easy to process. Furthermore, it does not emit corrosive gases, and it meets aerospace smoke density and toxicity requirements.

Benefits listed by 3D Systems include the same toughness of injection molded plastics, the ability to build prototypes that withstand functional testing, and the ability to produce durable end-use parts without tooling. 3D Systems envisages application in aerospace and aircraft cabin, compartment, and cargo applications; complex, thin-walled ductwork; unmanned air vehicles; and telecommunications equipment, among other prototyping and rapid manufacturing applications. —[email protected]
