"Let's rethink glass," says specialty glass and glass ceramics developer Schott (Elmsford, NY) on its website. Sometimes, that revisionist thinking leads to plastics. At Interphex 2015, which was held in New York City on April 26 to 28, the company featured its new polymer prefillable syringe. The TopPac SD is designed to improve the safety and stability of sensitive drugs, according to a company press release.
"As more sensitive drugs enter the market, the need for high-quality, reliable packaging becomes increasingly important," said Anil-Kumar Busimi, Head of Global Product Management, Syringes Business, in the news release. The TopPac SD syringe provides pharmaceutical manufacturers with a trustworthy solution for their sensitive drugs and supports patient safety, he added.
By virtue of a specific component selection process and optimized processing method, Schott offers a significant reduction in impurities, decreasing the chance of drug/container interactions. The prefilled syringe features an inert barrel made of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) that releases no ions or heavy metals, minimizing the chances of a chemical interaction with sensitive drugs. Additionally, the syringe was developed with pure elastomer components in order to reduce the product's extractables and leachables (E&L) profile. Cross-linked silicone for barrel lubrication reduces the amount of subvisible particles while optimizing functionality. Finally, the new syringes are sterilized by means of ethylene oxide, rather than irradiation, to further reduce the E&L profile.
While the new product features a number of components that were specially designed to house sensitive drugs, the syringe also retains the traditional advantages of the TopPac product line, including glass-like transparency, an integrated Luer-lock system, standardized tub-and-nest offerings, and compatibility with needleless IV connectors.
