Long-fiber resins now available in UV-stabilized grades

New UV-stabilized grades of Verton reinforced nylon and polypropylene have been developed to fend off brittleness, changes in color, and ultimately possible product failure common with ultraviolet exposure. ?UV degradation is a surface phenomenon,? says Dick Sabo, Verton product manager at LNP. ?Our UV package, combined with Verton?s fiber matrix skeleton, yields long-term resistance to notch sensitive impact failures.?

In addition, Verton UV materials reportedly have better mechanical properties than short-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, providing a combination of strength, stiffness, and impact resistance, while remaining lightweight. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, including sunroof beams and door handles in automotive applications, ladders and seat supports in boating applications, ski and snowboard bindings, and more.

UV grades reportedly retain 90 percent of their tensile strength and modulus after accelerated Xenon arc UV testing. The nylon grades are available in 35-, 50-, and 60-percent glass loadings, and PP grades are available in 30-, 40-, and 50-percent glass loadings. Colors include natural, black, and custom. There is a $.05/lb upcharge for the UV grades. An average truckload price for the UV PP grades is $1.73/lb. For the UV nylon 6/6 grades it is $3.16/lb.
