Prototyping resins mimic PP, PC

A prototyping resin possessing many of polypropylene?s mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, modulus, and appearance, has been developed by DSM. Somos 9110, the latest in DSM?s ProtoFunctional line of resins, is a high-speed liquid photopolymer that is said to produce functional and accurate parts using stereolithography machines. It reportedly offers wide processing latitude, good resistance to temperature and humidity during and after build, and good chemical resistance. The resin has a tensile strength of 4500 psi, a flex modulus of 210,000 psi, and a notched Izod impact strength of 1.03 ft-lb/in. PP applications include automobile components, electronic housings, medical products, large panels, and snapfit parts.

Also from DSM is 10120 WaterClear, a stereolithography resin with the optical clarity of polycarbonate. The resin is said to mimic the flexural strength (11,000 psi) and modulus (344,000 psi) of polycarbonate, the notched Izod impact strength (.57 ft-lb/in) of nylon 6/6, and the tensile strength (6237 psi) of ABS. Although the resin is clear, it may be dyed in a secondary step for coloring. Applications for this epoxy-based photopolymer include flow visualization, complex assembly analysis, form/fit analysis, and functional testing.
