Resins provide visual effects; flame-resistant pc/abs conforms to eco-label

Fashion and aesthetics play an ever-increasing role in product appeal, and six new resins have been introduced to help products stay on the cutting edge of design. From GE, these latest additions to the Visualfx resin line are formulated with color and effect inherent in the pellet to create colorful and rich-looking parts out of the mold without the need for secondary paint and coating operations. The new effects bring the total available to 16.

They include the following:
* Enyo, available in Lexan PC resin, imparts a spectrum of colors as the viewing angle changes, as opposed to the two-tone color shift of the original Intrigue effect.
* Lustre, available in precompounded Lexan resin, reproduces a pearl finish (see photo).
* Glass, available in Cycolac ABS or Lexan resins, simulates the appearance of stained glass or gems.
* Make-Up, available in Cycoloy ABS/PC resin, applies rich color and subtle sparkle.
* Smoke, available in Lexan resin, features a translucent base with a tint of grays and browns.
* Frost, available in Lexan resin, gives a pale, translucent color without sparkle or sheen.

All six effects are available in a variety of colors. Applications for these Visualfx resins include household appliances as well as computers and electronics.

GE also announced the expansion of its flame-resistant eco-label-conforming products to include Cycoloy C2951 PC/ABS. It reportedly offers good performance for products in a variety of markets in which UL94 5VA flame resistance is required. This resin is said to feature a balance of good flow with impact and heat resistance coupled with good processibility and colorability for enhanced performance. Applications include household appliances, consumer electronics, lighting, signs, and heating/cooling equipment.
