Tetra Pak wins two WorldStar Awards for sustainable packaging

Tetra Top with Separable Top and Tetra Prisma Aseptic 1000 with plant-based plastics both were triumphant in the Beverage category, receiving specific recognition for their commitment to the environment.

The Tetra Top with Separable Top was recognized for providing consumers with a balance between functionality and sustainability. It brings together the convenience of a bottle with a modern look and feel of a carton package, and its design allows consumers to remove the plastic top from the carton sleeve due to the pre-cut perforation on the outer layer of the cardboard, allowing them to be recycled separately. â€¨â€¨According to 2015 research conducted by Tetra Pak (Lund, Sweden), 80% of consumers globally try to recycle as much as they can. With this increased consumer interest in recycling, the Tetra Top with Separable Top has been successfully rolled out in Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Estonia, Finland and also in Japan. 

Coca Cola's Del Valle Reserva, which uses the Tetra Prisma Aseptic 1000, was also acknowledged for its use of biobased materials. â€¨â€¨According to Tetra Pak, the Tetra Prisma Aseptic 1000 is a first in the packaging industry where the conventional polyethylene layers are substituted by low-density polyethylene from a renewable source: sugar cane. As a result, the package uses up to 78% of renewable materials, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through the absorption of CO₂ during plant growth. The package has a cap made with biobased HDPE. Paperboard is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which means it comes from forests managed in accordance with responsible forestry management principles. Due to the same chemical and physical properties of biobased and fossil-based polyethylene, the package remains 100% recyclable.

The WorldStar Competition is one of the major events of the World Packaging Organization (WPO) and is the distinguished international award in packaging.

There were 265 entries from 38 countries around the world, where 148 were selected as WorldStar winners by a jury that met in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in November last year. The awards ceremony was held during IPACK-IMA in Milan, Italy, on May 19, 2015, and winners were presented with their WorldStar Award.
