Toray plans Indonesian compounding operation

Article-Toray plans Indonesian compounding operation

Japan's Toray Industries, Inc. (Tokyo) plans to establish a resin compounding plant in Indonesia. The site will start up in November 2013 and manufacture polyamide (PA) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) compounds primarily for use in automotive applications. Toray will invest around $7.5 million in the 6000-tonnes/yr facility, which will be co-located at an existing PA polymerization and yarn-making affiliate near Jakarta.

Indonesia's automobile production is forecast to grow to more than 2 million vehicles in 2020 from 840,000 in 2011, thus ranking the country as a major automobile production base alongside Thailand in Southeast Asia. The country's economy, meanwhile, is growing at 6% a year and per capita GDP of the  country's population of 240 million exceeded $3000 in 2010, meaning consumption of electrical and electronic products is also expected to expand.

Against this backdrop, demand for engineering plastics is expected to grow at an annualized pace of about 9% from 21,000 tonnes in 2011 to 45,000 tonnes in 2020. Toray aims to be the first to capitalize on growth in demand for engineering plastics in Indonesia through establishment of the nylon and PBT compounding facility.
