A cost-effective solution to workforce illiteracy

Illiteracy costs businesses and taxpayers $20 billion each year, according to the United Way. Other studies show nearly one in five workers cannot read or write. Literacy Unlimited says it has developed a practical and affordable solution to combat illiteracy in working adults: a phonics-based literacy system called Blumenfeld?s Alpha-Phonics (named after Samuel Blumenfeld, whose original Alpha-Phonics workbook was developed in 1983). The system includes six instructional audio tapes and an introductory video tape, providing beginning readers with personalized tutoring to help them learn how to sound-out the syllables in words, to reinforce their progress, and to give them the ability to teach themselves to read with accuracy and confidence. It is also suitable for English-as-a-second-language adults, and according to Literacy Unlimited, those users can learn to read and correctly pronounce English in as little as three months when using the system.

Literacy Unlimited offers technical support along with its phonics system. It can tailor programs to suit different circumstances and offers call-in tutoring help services. An interactive CD-ROM version of Blumenfeld?s Alpha-Phonics is in the works. Meanwhile, a complete tape system with flip-charts, workbooks, and other accessories costs less than $300.
