Mass savings promised from PPS polymer

A mineral/glass-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) grade for automotive fuel systems promises 45% weight savings compared with its predecessor.

Fortron 6162XF from Ticona (Kelsterbach, Germany) is designed specifically for applications in contact with aggressive fuels that contain oxygenates such as methanol and ethanol. Applications include impellers, outlet covers, and fuel injector components.

"In 1000-hour exposure tests in CM15A fuel conducted at 90ºC, Fortron 6162XF exhibited superior fuel resistance, with a weight change of less than 1%," says Ralf Langhammer, Ticona fuel systems market development engineer. Fortron’s continuous use temperature is 160ºC-240ºC, with short-term temperature resistance of up to 270ºC. It boasts broad chemical resistance—including automotive/aircraft fuels and fluids, and strong acids and bases (pH 2-12)—even at elevated temperatures. —[email protected]
