Phillips-Medisize Helps Bring Next-Gen Insulin Pump to Market

Phillips-Medisize, a Molex company, has entered into a collaborative agreement with Modular Medical, a development stage insulin-delivery technology firm. Phillips-Medisize is bringing its  design and development expertise to the manufacture and assembly of the MODD1 insulin-delivery system, which Modular Medical describes as the “next generation of user-friendly and affordable insulin pump technology.”

San Diego-based Modular Medical has developed proprietary technologies that are said to eliminate the trade off between complexity and efficacy, "thereby making top-quality insulin-delivery both affordable and simple to learn." The company was founded by Paul DiPerna, a medical device professional and microfluidics engineer who invented and designed the t:slim insulin pump, marketed through Tandem Diabetes, which he established in 2005.

Phillips-Medisize has a long history of designing, engineering, and manufacturing drug delivery, in-vitro diagnostic, medtech, and specialty consumer devices. Specific expertise provided to Medical Modular includes conventional, two-shot, and insert injection molding, as well as other services such as packaging, electronics design and manufacturing, and assembly operations. Headquartered in Hudson, WI, the contract services company operates multiple facilities throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

"Phillips-Medisize brought engineering resources, insulin delivery materials, and medical manufacturing knowledge, while providing supply chain expertise, to enable Modular Medical to scale rapidly and seamlessly to meet anticipated consumer demand. The collaboration is preparing Modular Medical to quickly market its new delivery technology for insulin-requiring patients with diabetes," said Schmid.
