SunMed, a manufacturer and distributor of consumable medical devices for anesthesia and respiratory care based in Grand Rapids, MI, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a Vyaire Medical business unit that manufactures and markets respiratory and anesthesia consumables focused on airway management and operative care. As a leading manufacturer wholly dedicated to this market, SunMed said the transaction will position the company to enhance innovation and ensure reliable product supply for customers as a one-stop source for consumable respiratory and anesthesia medical products.

“The transaction brings together two like-minded teams who share a deep commitment to quality, reliability, and continuous innovation as trusted partners to healthcare professionals,” said SunMed CEO Hank Struik. “Vyaire’s respiratory and anesthesia business brings an impressive manufacturing platform, which will add to our already deep North American manufacturing presence a strong product pipeline with some of the most trusted brands in the market and deep relationships with customers and distributors. This transaction will enable us to deliver even greater innovation, predictability, and value for our customers, their practitioners and their patients — all on an expanded global basis.”

Advantages cited by SunMed resulting from the combined businesses include a more comprehensive respiratory and anesthesia portfolio; enhanced plastics processing capabilities across 250,000 square feet of manufacturing space; an expanded manufacturing footprint in North America as well as a facility in Shenzhen, China, and increased global presence across more than a dozen countries; and increased engineering expertise with more than 150 engineers globally.

Healthcare investment firm Frazier Healthcare Partners acquired a majority ownership stake in SunMed in 2021.

Vyaire purchased the respiratory and anesthesia consumables business from Becton Dickinson in 2018.

Presuming it meets customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to be completed in the first half of this year.
