PCT polymers are clear, tough, and easy to mold

Answering the demand for a clear, chemical-resistant, and easily processed resin, DuraStar polymers have been introduced for a wide range of applications. The base resin is acid-modified PCT polymer.

The four new grades are nearly water-clear, according to Eastman, and can be tinted or colored. Two of the grades, DS1000 and DS1010, are suited for thick-wall applications. DS2000 and DS2010 fill intricate molds easily and are tougher grades, with notched Izod results of 14 ft-lb/in at 73F and 1.1 ft-lb/in at -40F. DS1010 and DS2010 both contain mold release. All grades are FDA-approved and reportedly exhibit good processing characteristics, chemical resistance, and hydrolysis resistance, which means shorter drying times?between 1 and 4 hours.

Products that historically have used polycarbonate, clear ABS, and acrylic can be molded with DuraStar polymers, say company sources. Applications include pens and stationery supplies, displays, appliances, toys, sporting goods, and the pictured vacuum cleaner from Rexair Inc. DuraStar was selected for the Rainbow E-Series vacuum because of the exacting service-use conditions requiring clarity, impact resistance, and chemical resistance. The part is a detachable water basin that collects dirt and dust typically deposited in a bag or canister.
