Metrology system tackles troublesome parts

Promising to measure problematic parts accurately, the SmartScope Quest 600 uses a telecentric zoom lens with episcopic illumination for the metrology of cylindrical and prismatic parts that are difficult to measure. According to the manufacturer, the complex shapes and transparent materials often produced in molding make focusing and recording accurate dimensional measurements difficult for some metrology machines, but the SmartScope?s zoom lens and ability to illuminate parts from various angles reportedly produces clear, high-contrast images with minimal distortion. Additional features include an 18-by-24-inch measurement area and granite bridge construction to provide added stability. A load rating of more than 250 lb also allows the SmartScope to measure larger parts. Customized fixtures can be made to accommodate measurement of specific parts, and automation for increased productivity is also possible.
