Film pairs with rubber for hoses and belts

Article-Film pairs with rubber for hoses and belts

Normally seen in machine or filter technology parts, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) can also be converted into extremely thin, high-performance films, that when applied to rubber, reportedly substantially enhance mechanical properties. GUR UHMW-PE from Ticona can be applied as a film to rubber products and result in high impact strength, good abrasion resistance, and low coefficients of friction due to a high degree of polymerization. The films also acts as a barrier against acids, alkalis, and gasses. Electrically conductive and nonconductive grades are available, with the conductive grades providing static dissipation for chemical hoses, conveyor belts sorting refuse, or other applications. White, blue, yellow, or red pigments are available for food applications, and the film meets food-contact regulations. UV-resistance is also a feature, and the film is said to be environmentally acceptable.

Just by using vulcanization, the film can be bonded with rubber compounds like EPDM, NMR, and SBR, without the need for adhesives. In addition to hoses, conveyor belts, and food applications, GUR offers a low resistance to stick-slip and coefficient of friction, making it a candidate for profiles in high-wear architectural and automotive applications.
