PEP establishes Caribbean footprint

Precision Engineered Products, which has been manufacturing components for medical applications since 1963, is bringing on line a 5000-ft2, Class 8 medical manufacturing operation in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic.

Production started this month with surgical staples. Manufacturing will expand to include molding, stamping and assembly.

Precision Engineered Products, which works in plastic and metal, has 10 manufacturing locations in four countries. The Dominican Republic facility is the second PEP operation devoted principally to medical manufacturing. PEP's Bridgeport, CT location is home to medical and surgical business units Lacey Manufacturing and Boston Endo-Surgical Technologies.

Boston Endo-Surgical Technologies (BE-ST), a manufacturer of spinal and orthopedic surgical instruments, was acquired last October. Other units are Brainin, General Metal Finishing, Lacey, microPEP, Polymet, and Wauconda. PEP is owned by private equity firms The Jordan Company of New York and Nautic Partners of Providence, RI,

Plastics-related specialties of PEP include micro molding and bioresorbable plastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) blends with varying intrinsic viscosity.

Because these materials exhibit unusual characteristics when micro molded, PEP develops micro tensile bars to provide the effects of 0.002 - 0.009-inch gate shear on customized compounds as part of design testing. Applications include anchors, stents, bone screws, seeds, sutures, pills, and medicine delivery applications.
