Mirek Planeta, the founder of plastic film and sheet extrusion machinery supplier Macro Engineering and Technology Inc. (Mississauga, ON), has announced that he will retire on June 14, 2019.
Planeta was born in the Czech Republic, where he earned an engineering degree in plastic and rubber processing from the University of Prague. He established Macro just outside of Toronto in 1978.
The initial focus of the company was improving air ring design, leading to the invention of the dual-lip air ring. Under his leadership, the company evolved from a component supplier to a provider of complete extrusion systems, becoming a global force in high barrier and specialty film processing technology. Today, Macro’s equipment operates in more than 40 countries.
Planeta was president of the company until 2016, when he resigned to concentrate on research and development. He holds more than 30 machinery and process patents and is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
“Mirek, we want to congratulate you on an absolutely remarkable career,” said Macro President and CEO Jim Stobie at the company’s retirement event. “You have made an enormous contribution to the plastic industry here in Canada and globally. You are admired and respected for your creativity and vision by friends, customers and competitors all over the world.” Planeta was awarded with a company designed “Mirek-Pack coextrusion die” model at the ceremony.
