Increased Web capabilities and a simpler migration from 2-D to 3-D are among more than 300 customer-driven enhancements in Unigraphics? SolidEdge version 9 mechanical design software ($4995). Solid Edge Web Publisher (pictured), an integrated optional module ($495) with the new release, reportedly streamlines publishing of 3-D models and related design information to the Internet. From within a design session users can create Web content?pages with 3-D models, product structure and bill of materials information, and design file properties?with a step-by-step wizard. Models created in this manner can be viewed and manipulated with a standard Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. The module is designed to enable companies to distribute files to nonengineering users.
Another optional module called Xpand3D ($495) automatically creates solid models from 2-D CAD drawings. It can convert drawings imported from AutoCAD DXF and DWG formats, MicroStation DGN files, and IGES files. After the user selects the desired drawing view, Xpand3D builds parametric, feature-based part models.
Large assembly performance has also been improved in version 9 with the addition of part simplification capability. This tool allows the user to define simplified versions of parts with fewer details than the as-designed version by removing features, faces, and regions.
Two new DesignAssistant sensors have been added as well to keep the designer informed of violations in user-defined parameters. One monitors the part?s surface area; the other is a custom sensor that monitors values calculated by custom programs.
